Parenting Your Spirited Child: When You're Running on Empty

No matter how purposeful we are in trying to become better parents, there are days where we just feel like we failed. It doesn't matter what type of child you have ~textbook child or a spirited child and every child in between~ we are human and we have days where in the heat of the moment, or after the day in and day out of the same old same old, we need some extra encouragement. Who doesn't? Where better to go to than to the Word of our precious Papa.

Here are a few Bible verses I have written out and put up around our house as I try to memorize them so that in the heat of the moment when my child's temperament has just hit the last straw with me, and my strength is about gone, I can read or recite these words of comfort and encouragement and try to remember that this IS a precious child of God~my child~who carries so many blessings even though they feel like burdens at the moment:

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7

Sometimes all you can do is stop and breathe. Let the peace of God fill you.

Train up a child in the way he should go;
and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity;
for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord~and their descendents as well.
Isaiah 65:23

Sometimes it feels like you are at the end of your rope with the guiding, the teaching, the disciplining and the encouraging. But it pays off. It sometimes doesn't feel like it in the heat of the moment, but it pays off. God has an amazing plan for our children and our families. What we are doing is not in vain.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God,
to those who are called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Sometimes it feels like the particular season you are in will never end. People who had children decades ago and have memory loss, I am sure ;) sometimes say to cherish this time in our lives because too soon it will be over. But it's true. Every one of these moments. The difficult messy ones. The beautiful, bring you to your knees, ones. Every one of these moments is special and God is working in us all according to His amazing purpose.

Sometimes it feels like we are running on empty and where better to go and fill up your soul than to the Words our Father left for us. What better encouragement? Which scriptures or quotes have been of encouragement to you  as you parent your children?
